In Greek mythology Urania was the muse of those arts and sciences which involve a knowledge of the heavens and of man’s relationship with them. Historically, man’s knowledge of the heavens has been embodied in the twin sciences of astronomy and astrology. In so far as these have been regarded as separate and distinct subjects, astronomy has concerned itself with the knowledge of the physical constitution of the universe whereas astrology has studied the effects of cosmic forces upon terrestrial life.

The Urania Trust was formed on 9th November 1970. The original trustees were James Russell, Ada Phillips, Charles Harvey, John Addey and Tom Fripp.

The aims of the Trust as shown by its charter are to further the advancement of education by the teaching of the relationship between man’s knowledge of beliefs about the heavens and every aspect of his art, science, philosophy and religion.

To this end the Trust has already provided significant help to individuals and organisations pursuing the Trust’s broad aims of bringing the harmonies of Heaven to Earth. It has made grants toward the translation and publication of papers, journals and books, the purchase of teaching aids and equipment, sponsored scholarships to attend courses and seminars, assisted with research projects and hosted several seminars and conferences. This 2002/3 Guide was the last produced in hardcover in a series made available since 1988. The website at www.uraniatrust.org contains most of this information and more.

The present Trustees are Jonathan Powell (Chair), Babs Kirby, Lindsay Radermacher and Christeen Skinner. Countless others have contributed to the Trust’s work.

The Trust has now lived through a complete Saturn revolution during which time it has endeavoured to fulfil all aspects of its charter. The purchase of the building at 396 Caledonian Road is a tangible expression of its commitment to a study centre. In recent times momentum has moved more toward creating a global home on the Internet. Development of the Urania Trust website (www.uraniatrust.org) continues. In 2002, the Trust was pleased to jointly host with the Astrological Association of Great Britain, the first Charles Harvey Day. This event, which was held on February 16th as the Sun passes the astrologer’s degree, honours the extraordinary achievements of a much respected and much missed colleague and trustee.
