NEW TELEPHONE DIALLING CODES

As from 22 April 2000, new dialling codes in the UK will have to be used.

International Codes: There will be no changes. When dialling abroad from the UK, you should continue to use the 00 prefix.

UK Codes: The 01 prefix will still be used to denote most of the area codes. However, in six areas of the UK, the area code will change.

  • Cardiff: (01222) xxxxxx will become (029) 20xx xxxx
  • Coventry: (01201) xxxxxx will become (024) 76xx xxxx
  • London: (0171) xxx xxxx will become (020) 7xxx xxxx
  • (0181) xxx xxxx will become (020) 8xxx xxxx
  • Portsmouth: (01705) xxxxxx will become (023) 92xx xxxx
  • Southampton: (01703) xxxxxx will become (023) 80xx xxxx
  • Belfast: (01232) xxxxxx will become (028) 90xx xxxx

The new area code with the new local number can be used now, but after 22 April 2000, the new 8-digit local number can only be used on its own without the new area code. 

Mobile, pager and personal numbers will be prefixed with 07.

Special Rate Services will be prefixed 08.

Premium Rate Services will be prefixed 09.
